Carpet Fitting Guidelines

At Riviera Home, our Authorised Dealers will ensure your carpet is properly installed with the help of their fitting experts.

Ensure a flawless finish with these essential tips:

Underlay Recommendation

  • Always fit our broadloom carpet over high-quality, solid underlay for optimal performance and comfort.

Installation Tools

  • Avoid using power stretchers, as they may damage the carpet.
  • Avoid using knee kickers on loop or cut-and-loop carpets as the pins can snag the loops and damage the carpet.

Installation Methods

  • Broadloom carpets can be directly glued to the floor or installed using double-stick methods.

Sealing and Seaming

  • Seal all cut edges with seaming cement.
  • Use heat seam tape for all seams to ensure durability and a seamless finish.

Velvet Carpet Adjustments

  • Handmade velvet broadloom carpets may have slight variations in pile height. A light shear with a handheld micro shear may be required for a uniform finish.

Colour Matching & Shade Variation

Colours may vary slightly between batches due to natural factors like wool source, breed, and environmental conditions. While we strive for consistency, undyed wools can show inherent variations.

For colour-critical projects, request a dye batch cutting from your Authorised Dealer before ordering to ensure it meets your expectations. If using carpet in adjoining areas, let us know so cuts come from the same batch.

Seams

Please consider the position of any seams, particularly when choosing Hand Loom broadloom. It may not always be possible to correctly align the lines in cut and loop hand woven broadloom where there is side to side matching involved.

All woven carpets should be cut from the face carefully following the row.

Stain Proofing Treatments

When deciding whether to apply a soiling or stain protecting product to your new carpet, please first consider the following:

  • Topical treatments can change the colour of your carpet.
  • They should be applied by a professional company with a good reputation.
  • Please be aware that the treatments may need to be reapplied at various intervals.
  • At best the treatments may slow down the rate of soiling and buy extra time to deal with spillages. They cannot offer complete protection.

If a topical soil protector is used and not applied properly, it may invalidate any claim raised for damage to the carpet.

Carpet Protection Film

We do not recommend the use of carpet protection film as it can trap moisture and depending upon the film used, leave a residue  which can be detrimental to the appearance of your carpet.

When you lay a new carpet, you might notice a few natural effects that are part of the settling process—here’s how to address them with ease.

Odours

New carpets may emit slight odours from adhesives or underlay. Ventilate the room, and these smells should dissipate within a few days.

Crushing

Flattening of the pile can happen in high-traffic areas, changing how the carpet reflects light, which can make the carpet look a  different shade. Regular vacuuming can help reduce this effect.  For persistent depressions, consider using a steam iron on a low setting (without direct contact) to gently lift the fibres or consult a professional for assistance.

Pile Reversal

Sometimes, the pile direction changes, creating light and dark patches (also known as shading or watermarking). This is a natural characteristic of many carpet types, including tufted, woven, and hand-made carpets.

Shedding / Pilling

Loop pile carpets may develop small fibre balls. To prevent this, vacuum with a cylinder cleaner using the suction head only, and limit contact with abrasive surfaces like pet claws or rubber soles.

Visible Bands

Occasionally, crush lines or pressure bands from storage may appear when unrolling your carpet. Don’t worry; these will fade with regular use and vacuuming.
