The Ultimate Rug Guide

February 10, 2025

Choosing the right rug isn’t just about finding a colour or pattern you love, it’s also about getting the size, and placement right.  A well-chosen rug can add warmth, define different areas in your home, and make everything feel more inviting.

Here’s our guide on how to get it right:

Rug Size

Size matters! A rug that’s too small can look lost, while one that’s too big might overwhelm the room. The right size helps frame your space, creates balance, and, most importantly, feels great underfoot.

Living Room Rugs

Your rug should work with your furniture, not against it. In smaller spaces, placing the front legs of sofas or chairs on the rug creates a cohesive look. In larger rooms, a bigger rug that allows all furniture to sit completely on it can visually ground the space. A custom rug can also be tailored to perfectly fit the room, leaving a gap between the rug and the walls for a well-proportioned finish.

Dining Room Rugs

The shape of the rug should complement the shape of your table—round, square, or rectangular. It should also be large enough for chairs to remain on the rug even when pulled out. A good rule of thumb is to allow at least 60cm beyond the table’s edges. In larger spaces, a more expansive rug works well, but avoid placing it directly against furniture like sideboards.

Since dining areas are prone to crumbs and spills, opt for a flat-weave rug that won’t trap debris in the pile. Easy-to-clean fibres like wool or TufStrand® are ideal choices.

Rugs for Open-Plan Spaces

Rugs are great for defining zones in open-plan spaces. Use them to separate seating areas from dining spaces, making each section feel distinct and well-put-together.

Kitchen Rugs

A runner placed in front of the sink or prep station adds warmth and comfort to a kitchen. Ensure it’s appropriately sized for the work area, and consider using multiple runners if your layout has more than one functional zone. Opt for a durable, easy-to-clean, non-slip rug to keep things practical.

Rugs for Entrances and Hallways

Runners are ideal for long, narrow spaces — just make sure there’s some floor visible around the edges for a balanced look. If placed near a door, choose a low-pile rug to prevent it from catching when opening and closing. For high-traffic areas, opt for a fibre that’s designed to withstand daily wear and tear.

Bedroom Rugs

There’s nothing like stepping onto a soft rug first thing in the morning! The size and placement depend on your bed type and room layout. For a centrally positioned single or double bed, the rug can sit fully or partially underneath, ensuring the floor at the sides and foot of the bed is covered.

For a luxurious feel, choose a larger rug that extends beneath the bed and reaches the bedside tables. If you prefer a subtle touch, a smaller rug at the foot of the bed adds warmth and interest. If your bed has storage drawers, a low-pile or flat-weave rug ensures easy access.

Outdoor Rugs

An outdoor rug can transform your outside space, whether it’s a dining or seating area. It helps anchor and define the space while adding a cosy, inviting touch.

The same size principles apply as in indoor dining and living areas. Just ensure your rug is designed to withstand all weather conditions. TufStrand® Polypropylene is an excellent choice — durable, weather-resistant, and easy to maintain.

Final Considerations

Rug shape matters too — round, rectangular, or layered, make sure it works with your space. If layering rugs, ensure the top rug’s size complements the base layer for a cohesive look. And if in doubt, keep an equal amount of floor space around the rug to maintain balance.
